Dental Technician Training and Education
To become a skilled dental technician, you must have years of theoretical study and practice. Being one means that you are will work on the dental defects of the patients. It is your job to create a prosthetic solution in accordance to what a dentist will prescribe. This job is very similar to what
goldsmiths and ironsmiths do during the yesteryears. The only difference that you will have with them is the kind of tools that you will be working with. Crowns, bridges and other orthodontic equipment will be your new best friends. It is true that this career does not have any specific educational requirement. People who worked as dental technicians in the past decade had their training at the time that they were hired. Most of them did not even take up a course that is related to the field. But due to the recent improvements in this industry, they are now being asked to finish a formal training to become a dental technician. This also means that those who have certifications and bachelor’s degree are paid better than those who don’t have one.

The United States of America has over thirty dental laboratory courses and programs that are under the supervision of the American Dental Association. This organization is responsible for all the accreditation related to the world of dentistry. Certificates are earned by finishing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from any technical and community college. The program will teach the students on the various types of prosthetic dental apparatuses used by technicians. They will also learn about ceramics, this is the main material used to make false teeth and other dental models. The course includes subjects like oral anatomy, physiology, occlusion, patient communication, chemistry and dental ethics.
An associate’s degree is just an undergraduate option. Dental technicians who have this rely on applied experience. That’s why they complete a laboratory internship first before they can graduate. A four year bachelor’s degree is more detailed and intense when it comes to training and education. Aside from the subjects mentioned above, students will gain knowledge about laboratory safety and quality control as well. They will be taught on how to do dental research and dental technology too.
With regards to certification, dental technicians can get their certificates from the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology. Before they can be a Certified Dental Technician or CDT, they have to pass two written examinations and one applied examination. The first examination is designed to measure the person’s general knowledge. The second one as well as the applied examination is meant for the five areas of specialization. That’s why they are asked to choose a specialization before they can take the exams. After this procedure, a CDT should complete 12 education credit hours in a year to maintain their NBC certification. The usual work place of dental technicians is a laboratory. This is where they create the prosthetic and orthodontic models from metal, wax, ceramics and other provided materials.
